Student Mentor Care Experienced

26 hours per week, Term Time Only

Based at St. Albans campus with travel required to Welwyn Garden City campus

Key Duties:

We are pleased to be able to offer this new and exciting role working with our care experienced students, who are under the care of Hertfordshire County Council. The main aim of the role is to retain students on their study programme. Establishing barriers to learning and supporting students to overcome them. Working closely with the Head of Safeguarding and the Care Experience Coordinator, the successful candidate will monitor attendance, set up mentoring sessions and be a pastoral support. Ensuring this, potentially vulnerable, cohort of learning have a positive experience at Oaklands College.

Required Skills:

  • Experience of mentoring Young People, ideally within education.
  • Understanding of the issues and barriers faced by young people in care, particularly those over the age of 16.
  • Proven experience working with young people, particularly those in care or from vulnerable backgrounds.
  • Understanding of the legal and social care framework surrounding children and young people in care.
  • Experience in planning and delivering one-to-one and group sessions.
  • Experience in liaising with external agencies
  • Non-judgmental attitude and cultural sensitivity.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with young people and maintain professional boundaries
  • Excellent listening skills and the ability to provide empathetic support.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Passionate about supporting young people and making a positive impact in their lives.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
