Praying for Elizabeth I

Why did Elizabeth I of England write and publish prayers during her reign? Why did Elizabeth’s subjects write and publish prayers for their queen? In an era before social media, prayers were a common way to share information, spread propaganda, and bring people together in order to encourage loyalty to the monarch. The contents of these prayers differed across Elizabeth’s reign and were highly dependent on the political, social, and religious background of the author. This project seeks to build the first searchable and accessible database of prayers written and produced for Elizabeth, which will allow us to more clearly understand the links between religion and politics and to uncover what people really thought about the (in)famous Virgin Queen.
