We are one of the largest partners of the University of the Highlands and Islands, a partnership of 13 colleges and research institutions comprising Scotland’s newest university.
As the UK’s leading tertiary education provider, we deliver both further education and higher education courses and that makes us different from traditional institutions. Through an innovative approach to learning and some of the best online learning technologies, we offer our students the complete learner journey, where they have choice and flexibility to study from access level right through to PhD.
UHI Inverness is at the heart of the community. Working closely with businesses and stakeholders, our curriculum and research capacity is designed to meet the ever-evolving needs of industry and support the strengths and ambitions of the region. Through a personalised approach, we help our students discover their right path, providing them with a combination of qualification and job-ready skills to succeed in the workplace. UHI Inverness has locations at Inverness Campus and also the Scottish School of Forestry (Balloch), a growing hub for research, innovation and enterprise set within a 215 acre site.
We are currently seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated member of staff to work with us as a Support Assistant in The Bothy, our workshop and drop-in study support centre, on a fixed-term basis.
Over the course of the academic year, our student support teams provide a programme of workshops & drop-in sessions, on topics such as study skills, wellbeing, funding, IT, and more. ‘The Bothy’ is our campus venue for this activity and this post presents an exciting opportunity to join the Wellbeing and Learning Support team who manage this service.
The Bothy Support Assistant, alongside our team of Education Support Advisers, also provides 1-1 training to students on general learning skills, both on an appointment-based and drop-in basis. You will be the first point of contact for The Bothy and will respond to student queries related to coursework and learning (e.g., regarding IT applications, how to access online resources, how to approach assignments, how to reference sources correctly, etc.). We have students learning both online and on campus, so this support may be delivered face-face in The Bothy, or over e-mail, phone, or Webex/Teams. You may also be involved in facilitating study skills workshops and study/peer groups as part of The Bothy’s programme of activity.
The role of The Bothy Support Assistant is key to maintaining the smooth running of The Bothy’s services and you will be undertaking much of the day-to-day administration, including diary management and marketing. You will also have a role in maintaining the Virtual Learning Environment for The Bothy, by creating, editing or organising our online content.
The ideal candidate will be great with people, have a background in education, support or training, and have an approachable and ‘happy to help’ attitude. You will need to be appropriately skilled to feel confident in advising students with Access-level through to Degree-level coursework and have the organisational and IT skills necessary to administrate the service.
If you are keen to be a valued part of a progressive and supportive education team, then we would love to hear from you.
Essential Criteria:
- Educated to HNC level/equivalent, or can demonstrate equivalent professional experience
- Experience of the demands of coursework expectations at Further or Higher Education level, across the academic year
- Excellent communication skills- both written and verbal
- Highly competent with IT, specifically MS Office programmes, and familiar with using cloud-based sites and common social media platforms
