dBs Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Lecturer in Game Art to join a fresh and dynamic teaching team.  This role is twofold; in the first instance we are looking for an experienced individual to lead the development of Game Art course content and resources across our centres in Manchester and Bristol and secondly, to form part of the wider course delivery team in one of those cities in September 2023. You will be part of a lively and supportive community, leading the development of our Game Art provision and helping set the standard by which the course will be run in each city. This will lead on to teaching as a member of the lecturing team, within a variety of settings, using a variety of teaching and assessment methods, delivering a world-class experience for our students and establishing dBs Institute as a leader in Game Art tuition.

About You

This role would suit a Game Artist with either an excellent Games Art portfolio and/or extensive experience in the games industry (freelance or contract work), with a particular focus on the delivery of 3D Modelling, Texturing, Animation and VR.

Duties are primarily to develop and deliver teaching material in our timetabled sessions and support the students in our various Game orientated workshops and studios. You should have the ability to work closely with a variety of internal/external stakeholders, bringing diverse voices into the student experience, ensuring the support we give our students is culturally competent.

In addition, whilst guiding students through the game development process, you will be expected to supervise collaborative Game Development teams made up of Game Art, Game Programming and Music Tech students and support learners academically and pastorally throughout their programme of study.

Qualifications/Experience (essential):

  • Good honours degree in relevant subject area (ie. at 2.1 or First level).
  • Excellent Games Design/ Art portfolio with a particular focus on the delivery of 3D Modelling, Texturing, Animation and/or VR.
  • Experience of teaching Games within an HE environment.
  • Experience of working in the games industry as Games Artist or Games Designer (freelance or contract work) with a particular focus on the delivery of 3D Modelling, Texturing, Animation and/or VR.
  • Strong, high-quality portfolio demonstrating varied abilities commensurate with the role.

Qualifications/Experience (desirable)

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) and capacity to register for doctoral study/ or research if needed.
  • Completed, or commitment to complete, a relevant teaching qualification such as Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or PGCHE.
  • Experience of module leadership in HE
  • Experience of leading the development, design, delivery and assessment of modules and courses at various levels.
  • Experience of supervising undergraduate or postgraduate projects.
  • Experience in HE mentorship, academic support or coaching experience.
  • A demonstrable commitment to scholarship, research and/or innovation.

Other Duties include:

  • Developing innovative learning and teaching strategies including digital materials and hybrid learning to promote an inclusive learning environment 
  • Supervising and assisting students with their game development portfolios.
  • Assisting students with individual practice projects and technical skills development.
  • Conducting and utilising playtesting, feedback and critique sessions on students’ projects and portfolios
  • Scheduling assessment feedback opportunities for portfolio development and employability

We are looking to hear from candidates who have the following skills/experience:

  • Excellent concept art skills in particular drawing from life 
     
  • Excellent understanding of game-based form and function, value, colour, lighting, atmosphere and emotion 
  • An excellent practical experience of conceptualising and illustrating assets including environments, characters and vehicles 
  • Confidence with 3D Content Creation and using software such as Adobe Photoshop/ Illustrator, Procreate, Blender/Maya or 3D Studio Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter and/or Substance Designer and other 3D/2D applications
  • Experience of game level design, gameplay theories, game mechanics, rapid prototyping, and/or economies and game balance.
  • A good understanding of the Game Development Process and the role of a Game Designer/ Artist
  • An understanding of how concept art fits into the wider games and film art process such as producing model sheets and blueprints 
  • Experience working on game projects or similar.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with other artists, designers, programmers and games developers
