The HE Welfare and Progression Officer’s role is to provide our students with excellent support with welfare issues and assist with their progression throughout their time studying with us and after graduating. This role will include liaising with students and curriculum teams, along with external support providers such as Student Finance, therefore it is important you are an approachable, confident person who is keen to support positive student outcomes and can work flexibly. You will be working within a multi-disciplinary team made up of mental health officers and learning support officers.

What You Will Do

  • Provide advice services to students on welfare issues that may be creating a barrier to student retention and achievement. Welfare issues include money and funding issues, benefit problems and housing.
  • Identify and support students requiring help in applying for and managing their Student Finance, liaising with Student Finance England when necessary.
  • Support students with their progression goals through one-to-one meetings and workshops, throughout their course and after studying with us.
  • Provide advice through face-to-face meetings, telephone and online. Taking student referrals direct from students and staff throughout the college, prioritising according to need, vulnerability and urgency of issue.
  • Develop and update resources related to careers and progression for students and staff to access across the University Centre Leeds campuses.
  • Work as part of the Student Support team to plan and deliver campaigns on welfare topics across all campuses.
  • Deliver information sessions to small groups or tutorial sessions, promoting the uptake of Student Finance.
  • Develop staff and student knowledge of welfare and finance issues through a range of activities, talks and events to promote effective information surrounding support available and signposting across college campuses.
  • Work with curriculum areas and Higher Education institutions to identify any gaps in progression and careers support for students and provide the necessary support and resources on an online career's platform, ensuring that all resources consist of accurate and up to date labour market information.
  • Maintain administrative and student records using relevant college management information systems recording all interventions accurately and in a timely manner and monitoring retention and achievement.

Your Experience

  • We are looking for an approachable, confident person who has excellent communication skills, can use their own initiative and develop their skills and knowledge to support students.
  • The ideal candidate would be happy working as part of a team, as well as being able to work independently when required.
  • We are looking for someone who is student focused, with knowledge and understanding of welfare and progression needs.
