Health & Safety Officer

Hours of work: 37 hours per week

Location: Based at the Wakefield City Campus, however, working across all campus sites will be required.

About the Team:

Health and Safety is part of our Estates team who cover a large remit of services including maintaining the College buildings, security, catering, caretaking, cleaning, maintenance, energy and waste management. The Estates team take extreme pride in the delivery of their service and the standards which they operate. The team works efficiently and effectively together and supports each other on a day to day basis. 

About the Role:

As Health & Safety Officer, you will be the primary point of contact for health and safety. You will promote a positive health and safety culture and embed health and safety within all areas of the College. This will involve providing health and safety function for the College by the active promotion of health and safety awareness and monitoring of health and safety related functions, including risk assessments and training and ensuring these are satisfactorily completed.

This role will involve the following duties:

  • Leading and promoting health and safety for the College, through open engagement with students, staff and visitors.
  • Establish with support from the Assistant Health & Safety Officer – Compliance a structured programme of health and safety training and deliver throughout each academic year, identifying key areas and compliance with changes to legislation
  • Manage, review and promote risk assessments
  • Organise and implement statutory fire evacuation drills
  • Conduct investigation of accidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses on and off College premises

The role of Health and Safety Officer is varied, and every day is different, with new challenges. You will get to meet and support staff from all areas of the College such as Motor Vehicle, Hair & Beauty, Hospitality & Catering, Horticulture and Animal Care.

About You:

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, passionate about health and safety and in turn an excellent communicator who can provide health and safety guidance and support staff working in Curriculum and Service Areas, which will enhance their delivery of teaching and working at the College. You should be proactive in identifying areas that require support and promote a positive health and safety culture.

You should hold NEBOSH Diploma 1 and 2 (or equivalent) as well as GCSE A* - C / 9 - 4 in English and Maths or level 2 equivalent. You should demonstrate excellent communication skills, analytical and report writing skills. As well as the ability to interpret and communicate complex Health & Safety regulations.
