Milton Keynes College Prison Education Team at HMP Bullingdon and HMP Spring Hill & Grendon are seeking experienced Lecturers/Tutors to deliver a variety of accredited and non-accredited qualifications to a diverse group of learners, helping to build their confidence, develop their skills and achieve within a college environment.

Sessional requirements can be varying and change frequently so flexible availability is essential. Requirements can range from short notice short term cover to longer term sickness cover or recruitment gaps and anything in between. If you hold qualifications or expertise in more than one – For example: Maths and English, this could give you the opportunity to cover across multiple courses and prisons in the area, and as a result the potential for more cover hours.

Permanent vacancies can be part time or full time hours, they are advertised individually and require a separate application specific to each role. For candidates who are considering permanent opportunities, the open event allows you to find out more about prison education in order to make an informed decision to apply for future permanent vacancies. 

A teaching qualification would be desirable, however those willing to work towards a teaching qualification who hold supporting subject specialism would also be considered. Milton Keynes College at HMP Bullingdon and HMP Spring Hill & Grendon are currently looking for individuals with the below skill set to support their curriculum delivery – typically delivery spans from Entry level to Level 2:

About HMP Bullingdon:

Bullingdon Community Prison is situated near the village of Arncott in Bicester, Oxon. HMP Bullingdon is a complex prison that has a number of functions.  It is categorized as a local category B prison which a category C resettlement function. HMP Bullingdon has the capacity to hold 1114 offenders all serving a range of sentences from remand to life, with the average length of stay between 3 and 6 months.

The College works closely with our prison colleagues to deliver short to medium courses that help prepare learners for employment upon release.  Courses include: English and Maths Functional Skills (Entry 2 to Level 2), ICT, Cookery, Hospitality, Business, Self-Employment, Painting & Decorating, Horticulture, Paving, Mentoring and Barbering. Education runs Monday to Thursday 9.00am – 11.30am and 1.45pm – 4.00pm, and on Fridays 9.00am – 11.30am.

About HMP Spring Hill/HMP Grendon:

For many of the staff employed to work at HMP Spring Hill, they also have an opportunity or are required to teach at HMP Grendon (less than two minute walk between sites).

HMP Grendon is a unique Therapeutic Category B national prison housing approximately 220 long term, prolific (re)offending adult males. 

The Education Department works closely with our prison colleagues to deliver relevant long courses that help prepare learners for employment and positive community living upon release.  Courses include: English and Maths Functional Skills (Entry 1 to Level 2), IT, Business, Barista, Horticulture, Cleaning, Personal Social Development skills and Family/Parenting. Education runs 4 afternoons (Mon – Thurs) from 13:45- 16:45. During the mornings the men are involved in therapy work with a wide team of clinical and officer staff on the wings.

HMP Spring Hill is an Open Category D (resettlement) prison, housing approximately 320 male prisoners who are at the end of their custodial sentence and working towards resettlement. Residents at Spring Hill are considered low risk and are well underway with rehabilitation and resettlement. Courses at Spring Hill are as above, with additional vocational courses such as Carpentry, Plumbing, Professional Cookery, Customer Service and Bookkeeping and CSCS. Education runs from 8:30 – 11:30 Monday to Friday and 13:00 – 16:00 Monday to Thursday.

Milton Keynes College are offering potential candidates who possess suitable skills/experience the opportunity to visit one of the prisons for an open event. This will allow candidates to experience the environment and find out more about the day-to-day regime and expectations.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Hold a relevant Degree or Vocational qualification (level 3 or above) in a subject specialism.
  • Hold a recognised teaching qualification or above or willing to work towards.
  • Have teaching/training or vocational experience in relevant subject area and relevant up-to-date knowledge.
  • Have experience of identifying, developing and sharing innovative and creative teaching resources
  • Have experience of working with students who may have little experience of education and training (desirable).
  • Have knowledge of current curriculum and accreditation developments within Further Education and specific subject area(s).
  • Have the ability to teach creatively, adapting to the needs of a variety of learners and willing to explore new teaching and learning strategies.
  • Have good IT skills and willing to develop further.
  • Show accuracy and precision in written presentation.
  • The requirement of this role is to work across the whole prison estate, on all wings where education is delivered
