The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is an agency of the Scottish Government, working in partnership with organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to deliver safe and secure custodial services that empower offenders to take responsibility and to fulfil their potential.  The people in our care include some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable members of our communities.  The nature and needs of those who are in custody are becoming increasingly more complex, meaning the world our staff work in is changing rapidly, presenting us with new challenges every day.

Further details of our work can be seen in the SPS Corporate Plan.

We are continuing to review and reshape our service, responding to existing and emerging challenges, by developing our workforce through further education, training and professional development.  SPS College, which provides development for all those who work in Scottish Prisons, has recently become a credit rating body and is undergoing an exciting period of change to ensure that we have the right teaching and research capacity to inform training design, assurance and delivery.

We are recruiting experts in key themes, to work within the SPS College and be part of this journey of transformation. We are currently looking for a Theme Lead in Leadership.

In role, you will have responsibility for all learning and development aligned to your specific theme. You will create and maintain a purposeful learning environment and design and deliver training up to, and including, postgraduate degree level. You will apply research skills to support, shape and inform policy and practice in the SPS and you will be responsible for contributing to organisational strategy.  Your role will include designing teaching and assessment materials, overseeing learner progress, providing feedback and support to learners, and assessing work. You will use a range of delivery techniques to engage and enthuse staff in learning and will work alongside other Theme Leads to ensure a cohesive portfolio of CPD activities, tools, products, resources and services for staff, assuring overall organisational capability for the SPS.

The SPS College is situated in Falkirk, Central Scotland, located in-between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Excellent transport links are in operation with regular train and bus links from Glasgow, Edinburgh and surrounding areas. Polmont train station is within walking distance from the SPS College. Within the role travel may be required to support research and training design within your specific area of work.

Successful applicants will hold a minimum of an Undergraduate Degree (or equivalent/higher) relevant to Leadership and if you don’t already possess one, you will work towards and achieve a relevant learning and development qualification.

In role you will enjoy a range of benefits we offer, including job security, generous annual leave entitlement (37 days raising to 42 days), civil service pension scheme, childcare vouchers, free parking, free gym access and discounts at a number of high street stores and restaurants. Most importantly, you will be undertaking a role where you can make a real difference, helping to ensure there is fairness, safety, prosperity and opportunity, for all citizens across Scotland.
