Working week: Monday - Thursday, 08:45 - 17:00, Friday 08:45 - 16:00. Total hours per week: 36.50.

To work as part of the Technician Team and gain the necessary skills and knowledge to produce reliable and complete practicals so that our students can carry out their work safely and effectively.

The primary duties, tasks and responsibilities of this job role include:

Work connected to student practicals:

  • Preparation of equipment and resources for use in prep rooms and laboratories following the appropriate procedures and methods as laid down in departmental files
  • Appropriate labelling of glassware and materials in line with COSHH regulations
  • Safe storage and handling of chemicals in accordance with CLEAPSS guidelines
  • Be on hand to provide advice for students undertaking small project work
  • Learn how to handle unfamiliar instruments by following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

Administration:

  • Deal with matters raised by lecturing staff regarding laboratories in consultation with Lead Technician
  • Keeping stock records and inventories up to date
  • Help with the creation, reproduction and filing of teaching materials
  • Researching for new practical methods; carrying out subsequent testing in order to produce new SOP’s for students

Health & Safety:

  • Assist in the provision of a safe working environment for both staff and students
  • Be conversant with the college’s procedure for evacuation in case of Fire
  • Deal with accidental spills in a calm and efficient manner
  • Report defects with equipment, furniture and fittings to the Lead Technician in the first instance and organise their repair

Desired qualifications

  • Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science or equivalent A levels or Access to Science
