We are seeking to appoint an ambitious and inspirational academic leader to take on the new position of Head of School, Arts + Media. Embracing interdisciplinary exchange, the post holder will demonstrate extensive knowledge and expertise across contemporary art, media arts, and hybrid practices.

Plymouth College of Art is one of a small number of independent art schools remaining in the UK’s Higher Education sector, and is nationally and internationally recognised for its ethical commitment to creative learning [through pedagogical innovation] and social justice [through community impact and social mobility]. PCA continues to foster international partnerships, developing a vibrant culture of scholarship and research, and has applied for Taught Degree-Awarding Powers.

Forward thinking, PCA is a creative community working across the fields of contemporary art, craft, design and media, with a focus on inquiry-led practice and integrated learning. The College puts the student at the centre of learning, and is committed to interdisciplinary dialogue and open resources, providing an exciting context for collaboration, network building, and professional opportunities.

Plymouth College of Art is in the process of a comprehensive structural, technical and curricular review and has formed three new exciting schools: Arts + Media, Design + Communication, and Critical + Cultural Studies. The Head of School will bring new ideas and expertise to bear on the consolidation, development, and innovation of the subjects within Arts + Media, contributing to the development of a common framework supporting cross-college curricula to be launched in 2020. In this context, the role is two-fold: ensuring that the existing provision is delivered at the highest standards, ensuring an excellent student experience; while fully contributing to the development of a new school embracing new thinking and future directions.

This is a senior academic leadership position, and the post holder will be responsible for the existing undergraduate provision (approximately 640 students) including BA (Hons) 3D Design Crafts; BA (Hons) Animation; BA (Hons) Ceramics & Glass; BA (Hons) Digital Media Production; BA (Hons) Film; BA (Hons) Fine Art; BA (Hons) Game Arts; BA (Hons) Jewellery; BA (Hons) Painting, Drawing & Printmaking; BA (Hons) Photography; and Extended BA (Hons) Degrees. The Head of School will also lead and develop out growing postgraduate provision (currently 60 students in the school), working closely with the MA programme leader.

The Head of School will be active in their field, contributing to Plymouth College of Art’s emerging research culture, as well as engaging externally in the development of his/her subject area growing the external profile of PCA nationally and internationally.

The post holder will meet a range of essential criteria, a few being: postgraduate degree in Contemporary Art (Fine Art) and/or Media Arts; extensive experience relevant to the academic portfolio of the school and its future development; demonstrable record of integrating research and knowledge exchange into curriculum design; proven leadership ability achieving high levels of engagement and motivation across a multi-disciplinary team of staff; experience of creative entrepreneurship, and an understanding of the relationship of emerging technologies with traditional artistic practices; evidence of impactful, high quality research and/or equivalent industry/professional practice experience; knowledge and experience of pedagogic models which integrate theory and practice; sound understanding of the creative economy, employability and/or social engagement relevant to higher education and PCA; ability to lead the improvement of the student experience promoting an inclusive environment for students and colleagues; and demonstrates ability to mobilise and motivate others towards delivering a strategic vision.

Closing Date:  2 January 2018 (12.00pm GMT)

It is anticipated that the interviews will take place week commencing 14 January 2018.
