Lecturer in Optometry (x3 Posts)

The role of Lecturer in Optometry is a new academic opportunity within the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). The initial development phase of the post is funded by the European Social Fund and Scottish Funding Council as part of Developing Scotland’s Workforce in the Scotland 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Fund Programme. During the development phase the role will be dedicated to curriculum development for the new BSc (Hons) Optometry programme (x2 posts until August 2019, x1 post until August 2020). Following the development phase the post holder will transition into a lecturer role with responsibilities to include delivery of the programme.

Initially, the post holder will work closely with the Head of Optometry as part of a team across two sites (Inverness and Moray Colleges, UHI) to further develop an innovative curriculum for the undergraduate training of Optometrists within UHI’s new Department of Optometry. The optometry team will be supported by the UHI Educational Development Unit (EDU). This team are highly experienced in successfully supporting the development of curricula across a wide range of programmes including health, allied health and social care. The post holder will be required to engage effectively with staff within the UHI Department of Optometry, UHI School of Health, Social Care and Life Sciences, NHS board partners, optometry industry partners, NHS Education for Scotland and such other bodies or groups that may be relevant, to develop optometry undergraduate curriculum including materials suited to online/blended delivery. Engagement with professional regulators will also be required as it is important that the curriculum and learning resources developed will not only be contemporary and sector relevant, but will also be of high quality and meet all necessary professional requirements.

Once the post transitions into a lecturing role, the post holder will be involved in preparing and delivering tutorials and lectures, demonstrating clinical techniques and supervising and supporting students within undergraduate student practice clinics. The post will also involve mentoring and supporting students as a personal tutor as well as supporting the management of the student placement programme. The assessment of student performance will also be a key part of this role as will the ongoing development of curriculum to enhance the student experience and identify new learning opportunities.

The ideal candidate will hold a degree or diploma in a relevant health area, be eligible for General Optical Council (GOC) registration as an Optometrist and have relevant experience in the optometry education sector and/or relevant optometry practice or hospital experience. A post-graduate qualification and/or teaching qualification would be an advantage.
