Plymouth College of Art is one of a small number of independent art schools remaining in the UK’s Higher Education sector, and is nationally and internationally recognised for its ethical commitment to creative learning [through pedagogical innovation] and social justice [through community impact and social mobility]. PCA continues to foster international partnerships, developing a vibrant culture of scholarship and research, and has applied for Taught Degree-Awarding Powers.
Forward thinking, PCA is a creative community working across the fields of contemporary art, craft, design and media, with a focus on inquiry-led practice and integrated learning. The College puts the student at the centre of learning, and is committed to interdisciplinary dialogue and open resources, providing an exciting context for collaboration, network building, and professional opportunities.
We are seeking to appoint a talented, ambitious, and inspirational leader to take on the new position of Head of School, Design + Communication. Plymouth College of Art is in the process of a comprehensive structural, technical and curricular review forming three new exciting Schools: Arts + Media, Design + Communication, and Critical + Cultural Studies (including the Graduate Centre). The Head of School will bring new ideas and expertise to bear on the consolidation, development, and innovation of the subjects within Design + Communication, contributing to the development of a common framework supporting cross-College curricula to be launched in 2020. In this context, the role is two-fold: ensuring that the existing provision is delivered at the highest standards, ensuring an excellent student experience; while fully contributing to the development of a new School embracing new thinking and future directions.
The Design + Communication provision (approximately 710 students) currently includes: BA (Hons) Commercial Photography for Fashion, Advertising and Editorial; BA (Hons) Costume Production & Associated Crafts; BA (Hons) Fashion; BA (Hons) Fashion Media & Marketing; BA (Hons) Graphic Design; BA (Hons) Illustration; BA (Hons) Interior Decoration, Design & Styling; BA (Hons) Printed Textile Design & Surface Pattern; BA (Hons) Product Design & Innovation; and BA (Hons) Textile Practices.
The Head of School will be active in their field contributing to Plymouth College of Art’s emerging research culture, as well as engaging externally in the development of his/her subject area growing the external profile of PCA nationally and internationally.
