(Ideally we are looking for one full-time member of staff to undertake the Fab Lab manager role and deliver the externally funded Knowledge Exchange project to create consistency and efficiency. However, we will consider candidates wishing to apply for just one of the part-time positions outlined below).
Fab Lab Plymouth is a high-end digital fabrication laboratory located on the Plymouth College of Art campus. The Lab houses state-of-the-art 3D printers, milling machines, laser cutters and routers and services the needs of staff, students, the public and businesses.
Fab Lab Manager
We are now looking for a forward-thinking, commercially savvy Fab Lab manager to join the team. The Manager will be responsible for setting the strategic direction of the facility and leading the development of new business partnerships and commercial activity. The focus will be placed on driving innovation to ensure that the Fab Lab is considered a hub for business, research and project collaborations by both internal and external stakeholders.
The successful candidate will have experience working within a commercial context and understand how to engage and support businesses to develop new products and processes. You will have a good understanding of the requirements of a Higher Education Institution and knowledge of the creative industries as well as a working knowledge of the Fab Lab facilities. You will be a skilled project manager with experience of managing staff teams and complex external partnerships. Ideally you will be well-networked and familiar with securing external funding streams.
Knowledge Exchange Co-ordinator
The College is part of a collaborative project, led by Exeter University, to create Impact Labs across the South West Peninsula. This role will be part-funded by the European Union's Regional Development Fund, as part of the Big Data and Environmental Futures Impact Lab project and will focus on supporting SMEs to develop new products and improve internal processes associated with the theme of Environmental Futures and Big Data.
Plymouth College of Art will be providing services and activities through the Fab Lab to support the project. This will include boot camps, challenges and business support sessions to engage SMEs. In collaboration with the other project partners, the Fab Lab team will support selected businesses with expert advice and technical expertise through a programme of Knowledge Exchange.
We are seeking an experienced project manager to launch and deliver the Impact Lab project. You will need to have experience working with multiple partners to deliver collaborative projects, with a good understanding of funding reporting and output requirements. You will have experience of engaging and supporting SMEs to develop new products and embed new processes. You will understand the value of Design Thinking and how the Fab Lab facility can support economic development. You will be an excellent communicator and have a good understanding of the requirements of a Higher Education Institution as well as a working knowledge of the Fab Lab facilities.
