Head of Communications and Public Affairs
Stirling (with duties throughout the Central Belt)
Colleges Scotland is a membership organisation and an Employers’ Association that acts as the collective voice for the college sector in Scotland. We represent all 26 colleges across Scotland and ensure their views are heard and their interests represented.
The college sector has seen considerable change over the past five years following a programme of college regionalisation and mergers. Over the coming years, the sector will continue to evolve and our members will face fresh challenges. To ensure we continue to provide our members with an excellent service, we are looking to recruit an experienced Head of Communications and Public Affairs. This new role will be a great opportunity for an experienced professional to further develop their skills and experience.
Operating at a national level, including supporting the recently re-established National Bargaining agenda, you will be responsible for driving forward transformational change to deliver strategic and proactive public affairs, public relations and communications services. As a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) you will work collaboratively with the Chief Executive/Directors and our members to ensure communications, public relations and public affairs strategies are coherent, innovative and effective. Externally, you will liaise with MSPs and politicians to raise the political profile of the sector as well as engage journalists to maximise the positive media coverage of colleges and Colleges Scotland. Additionally, you will advise the Chief Executive on proactive as well as reactive media communications.
As a professional your track record will evidence success within either a communications, public relations or public affairs environment where you developed and implemented effective strategies and worked closely with media contacts on reactive and proactive issues. It is anticipated you will have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of communications techniques as well as experience of managing and developing campaigns which build reputation and communicate effectively with key stakeholders. You will also have strong political acumen, exceptional communication skills, highly developed networking skills and the ability to effectively lead a team.
With Colleges Scotland being a membership organisation, it is essential that you evidence that you can build and sustain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. Knowledge of the college sector is desirable, however, it is not essential.
