Do you have a passion for Engineering? This role will involve learning the principles of milling and turning, progressing to become a CNC setter/operator on lathes and mills.
As part of a small machining team, the Apprentice will learn the basic principles of milling and turning, progressing to become a CNC setter/operator both on the lathe and mills. On completion of the apprenticeship, further training (in house and externally) will be available to become a skilled and highly competent CNC programmer.
The role of the CNC machinist will include:
- Assessing engineering drawings to establish a strategy for creating a machined part
- Implementing the strategy with consideration to which machine, or combination thereof gives the most efficient use of time and resources, available tooling and whether new tooling is required.
- Liaising with tooling suppliers to ensure the relevant tooling is ordered in a timely fashion
- Alerting stores and production staff as to material requirements
- On machine programming, and where necessary, off line programming machining paths for more complex parts
- Assessing and agreeing lead times with the Production Manager
- Ensuring quality targets are met at all times
- Liaise with Quality Engineer so that all parties are aware of tolerance limits and how these are o be attained and measured
- Planning work across several machines in order to maximise machine run times
Most of the components we machine are aluminium, stainless steel and Inconel. These are high value materials and certainly in the case of Inconel, considered to be challenging to machine accurately.
The apprentice will be responsible for the quality, timeliness and accuracy of the finished job.
Tasks will include:
- To discuss each job, at the outset, outlining and agreeing the machining strategy with the supervisor. Ensure you have a full understanding of requirements.
- Understand the upcoming internal requirements and typical supplier lead times, in order to alert supervisor or stores staff of tooling or billet requirements
- To resolve any issues directly with your supervisor during the machining process, or if he is unavailable an alternative supervisor
- To agree time and quality review points, if applicable, with your supervisor at the start of each job
- To be responsible for ensuring that Tricorn timekeeping is updated on a consistent basis
- To be responsible for quality and delivery of parts to agreed standards, based upon the information in the drawings, job card and job pack
- To address any serious concerns regarding timing and/or quality with the supervisor within sufficient time for corrective action to be taken without compromising customer deadlines
- To review finished jobs with the supervisor and approve subject to acceptable quality or determine any remedial work as required prior to sign off by the inspection department
- Ensure strict adherance to health and safety guidelines at all times
- To carry out all other duties as are reasonably required to support the smooth and efficient running of the business

- Performing Engineering Operations Level 2
- Award in Industrial Environmental Awareness Level 2
- EAL Level 3 Certificate in Engineering Technologies
- Functional Skills qualifications (if required)
- Attendance at College - Chaffron Way campus
- Regular visits from the College into the workplace
- Observations and assessments in the workplace
- Use of e-portfolio
- Ongoing training and support from both College and employer
