Kate Fox – training restaurant coordinator

Kate Fox

Tell us a little bit about your current role in FE:

I am responsible for the day to day running of the training restaurant in a large FE college. I work in conjunction with the catering teaching team, the production chef and support staff to ensure the provision of a high-quality learning environment, which delivers exceptional customer service and consistently high standards of food and beverage skills.

What are your key interests?

My key interests are customer service in a restaurant environment. Customer service is key in the catering industry and can have a massive impact on the bottom line of a business. High customer retention is very important, especially in today’s marketplace where there is so much competition for trade. My other interest is promoting a ‘can do’ or positive attitude to life and work. Identifying areas where you never say “no” without good reason and dealing with all situations with energy and efficiency.

How did you get into the job? What prompted your decision to move into FE?

My first job role was as a catering assistant in the commercial catering department. I soon realised that the college was a great place to work and offered lots of exciting opportunities for development to its staff. During my annual appraisal, I spoke with my line manager and expressed an interest in developing my own skills in order to further my personal development. I enrolled on a professional cookery course and the following year I began a restaurant supervision and management course. When I saw a vacancy for a support role job in the training restaurant I decided to apply. I was delighted to get the job and make my move into FE where I am able to continue working on my own development as well as that of our students.

How has working in FE helped your career?

Since working at college I have enrolled on two courses to further my career. The courses have helped me gain a promotion from restaurant assistant to restaurant coordinator. The college offers many courses and chances for development to its staff. It has helped me to improve many areas of my own work, which in turn benefits everyone I work with. There are many opportunities available to help with my personal development.

What do you enjoy most about your job in FE?

I find it rewarding to work in a support role with tutors and lecturers and take pride in my work. I like the positive environment of working in FE. Every day is different and I look forward to coming to work and helping the students to achieve their goals whilst working towards their chosen career path.
